Nicole Borger, Oren Neiman, and Frank London: Yiddish Bossa Nova

7 Stories Up presents Brazilian singer/songwriter and cultural producer Nicole Borger, guitarist Oren Neiman, and trumpeter Frank London in this NYC-iteration of the Brazilian Kleztival, which will blend Jewish music with Brazilian Bossa Nova.

This event will take place in person at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library on the 7th Floor.

In 1654, a ship with 23 Jews from Brazil docked at the shores of a small village, then called New Amsterdam, who established themselves there and helped to create the city which we know today as New York. To celebrate the 370 years since this event, the Brazilian singer/songwriter and cultural producer, Nicole Borger, brings to SNFL for the second consecutive year the NYC-iteration of the Brazilian Kleztival, and performs a concert which mixes Jewish music and Brazilian Bossa Nova.

Nicole will be accompanied by acclaimed trumpeter Frank London, and by her long-time collaborator, the guitarist Oren Neiman. Nicole and Oren have been making music together for almost fifteen years. They have worked together both in Brazil and in NYC.

To join the event in person | Doors will open 30 minutes before the program begins. For free events, we generally overbook to ensure a full house. Priority will be given to those who have registered in advance, but registration does not guarantee admission. All registered seats are released shortly before start time, and seats may become available at that time. A standby line will form 30 minutes before the program.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Nicole Borger,  Brazilian singer/songwriter and musical producer will bring with her a variety of songs in which she mixes her Jewish/Ashkenazic repertoire with sounds of Bossa Nova. Borger appears at Jewish musical festivals around the world — and started one, Kleztival, in Sao Paulo 14 years ago with her husband, Edy, and Klezmatics trumpeter Frank London. Nicole will present Yiddish tribute to Bossa Nova and Brazilian klezmer, a blend of Portuguese versions of Yiddish standards with Brazilian rhythms that give a new and refreshing meaning to the both Yiddish and Brazilian repertoires.

Oren Neiman is a Guitar/Mandolin player and a Composer. His compositions explore a combination of Jazz sensibility with Middle Eastern rhythms and melody. Oren was born in Israel, and has been based in New York for the last 20 years. He has released 2 albums as a leader, and composes and arranges for various projects with a community of frequent collaborators. These projects have toured nationally and internationally, as well as being featured in leading New York venues. Oren was the Guitar/Mandolin chair in National Yiddish Theater Folksbiene’s award winning production of Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish directed by Joel Grey. Other notable artists Oren has worked with include Frank London, Lee Musiker, The Outer Bridge Ensemble, James Zollar and many others. Trumpeter/composer Frank London is a member of the Klezmatics, Hasidic New Wave, has performed with John Zorn, LL Cool J, Mel Torme, Lester Bowieπs Brass Fantasy, LaMonte Young, They Might Be Giants, David Byrne, Jane Siberry, Ben Folds 5, Mark Ribot, Maurice El Medioni and Gal Costa, and is featured on over 100 CDs. His own recordings include Invocations (cantorial music); Frank London's Klezmer Brass Allstars' Di Shikere Kapelye and Brotherhood of Brass; Nigunim and The Zimros Project  (Jewish mystical songs, with Klezmatics vocalist Lorin Sklamberg); The Debt  (film and theater music); The Shekhina Big Band; the soundtrack to The Shvitz; the soundtrack to Perl Gluck's The Divahn and four releases with the Hasidic New Wave. His projects include the folk-opera A Night in the Old Marketplace (based on Y.L. Peretz's Bay nakht oyfn altn mark), Davenen for Pilobolus and the Klezmatics, Great Small Works' The Memoirs of Gluckel of Hameln and Min Tanaka's Romance. He composed music for John Sayles' The Brother From Another Planet and Men with Guns, Yvonne Rainer's Murder and Murder, the Czech-American Marionette Theater's Golem and Tamar Rogoff's Ivye Project. He was music director for David Byrne and Robert Wilson's The Knee Plays, collaborated with Palestinian violinist Simon Shaheen, taught Jewish music in Canada, Crimea and the Catskills, and produced CD's for Gypsy Ledgend Esma Redzepova, and Algerian Pianist Maurice el Medioni. He has been featured on HBO's Sex and the City, at the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Lincoln Center Summer Festival, and was a co-founder of Les Miserables Brass Band and the Klezmer Conservatory Band.

Institute of Jewish Music Brazil (IMJ-Brazil) The mission of IMJ-Brazil is to promote, disseminate, teach, preserve and develop the music of Jewish people, this great and wonderful heritage, for the benefit of present and future generations. It also aims to use Jewish music as a banner in favor of peace and coexistence among peoples. IMJ-Brazil is a partner and represents the Jewish Music Institute of London, a non-profit philanthropic organization registered in England, associated with the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) of the University of London.

This event is offered in partnership with Ticún Brasil, an NGO for art, spirituality and volunteering in Brazil. Since 2008, Ticún has been creating mutual inspirations for Brazilian and international artists via innovative cultural programs in Brazil and New York. Ticún Brasil activities range from volunteering in favelas to studies of Jewish themes in Afro-Brazilian religions and artistic performances in Rio de Janeiro and New York. The name comes from "Tikun Olam" (תיקון עולם) which means "repairing the world" in Hebrew.
