“Waiting for Summer” is feeling like a solstice-bearing catharsis to look forward to during these frigid months. With the expectation of returning to full capacity by June, Wavelength is excited to be presenting Chicago’s Circuit Des Yeux and Toronto’s own Picastro at 918 Bathurst.

Chicago’s Circuit Des Yeux is a singular experimental-epic-pop weaver and brainchild of Haley Fohr. Her sixth album and debut for seminal indie label Matador Records, -io, was released in October 2021 to widespread critical acclaim (Pitchfork, Mojo, Uncut, Dusted, The Wire, The Quietus, Beats Per Minute). Expansive and emotional, the album is a sonic footprint of how grief becomes a landscape. Written for a 23-piece orchestra and created during the pandemic, Haley Fohr’s performance is bound to be arresting and poignantly transformative.

Starting the evening will be Toronto’s slowcore staples, Picastro. If you are not acquainted with the brilliance of Liz Hysen, then today is your lucky day. Started in 1998 as a solo project by Hysen, Picastro expands to include an ever-evolving array of collaborators, who have included Owen Pallett, Nick Storring, and Brandon Valdivia (aka Mas Aya). Picastro’s latest release, I’ve never met a stranger, is an EP of touching covers, created by friends; cultivated by the uncertainty of life during a pandemic and harnessing the magic of not knowing.
