Live Virtual Sewing Workshop: Fashioning Intimacy with Abby Lutz

Create a pair of unisex shorts with [ ] of dress (https://of-dress.com/) designer and FWM Studio Senior Project Coordinator Abby Lutz! These shorts can be worn under or over things, a.k.a "underthings/overthings.” Participants will receive a digital pattern PDF first week of April designed by Lutz and featuring varying sizes, lengths and details to fit each participant’s needs. The live session will be led over Zoom; a recording of the workshop will also be provided for reference.
Fashioning Intimacy is recommended for the advanced beginner to intermediate sewer. Participants should feel comfortable threading and operating a sewing machine and sewing at an accurate seam allowance. In preparation for the workshop, you should also feel comfortable measuring yourself and cutting out fabric that will be required ahead of time.
Bio: Born in rural Vermont, Abby Lutz was raised in Pennsylvania and studied fine art, fashion and design at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition to designing clothing for her own label, [ ]of dress, Lutz is also a Senior Project Coordinator at FWM and has managed projects at the museum for artists such as Nick Cave, Sarah Sze, Jean Shin, and Mario Ybarra Jr. Most recently, she was the project lead for the FWM Studio during Samara Golden's residency and culminating exhibition, Upstairs at Steve's. Lutz lives and works in the Philadelphia area and is the mother of two young boys. Materials not included. You will receive the supply list from the instructor with details about where to print the PDF pattern locally and what fabrics to search for.
- Please wash your fabric before cutting out the pieces of your pattern.
- Please cut out the pieces of your pattern before class begins.
- The class will focus on sewing
Participants must supply the following supplies:
- Printed pattern (PDF will be emailed to registrants)
- Matching thread
- 1.5 yds of silk, cotton, rayon or other comfy drapey fabric
- Sewing Machine & Bobbins
- Pins
- Fabric Scissors or rotary cutter
- Measuring tape
- Seam ripper
- Iron and ironing surface
- Fabric marking tool (pencil or chalk)
- 1/2” elastic waistband (enough to go around your waist comfortably and stretches enough to go around hips)
- safety pins
