Event Description
A new exhibition is coming to the ToonSeum, and it is Horrible! Hagar the Horrible celebrates his 40th anniversary at the ToonSeum!
Hagar the Horrible broke all records when it was launched in 1973, becoming the fastest growing comic strip ever. The beloved Viking currently appears in over 1900 newspapers around the world and the strip has been translated into 12 different languages. The strip was created by Hi and Lois artist Dik Browne in his basement art studio/laundry room in Connecticut. The strip’s title was inspired by Dik Browne's nickname "Hagar the Horrible", and the characters were loosely based on Dik’s family and friends.
The legacy of both Hagar and Hi and Lois remain a family business as Dik’s children including Chris and Chance continue with drawing, writing and occasional pillaging responsibilities.
“This exhibition is more than just a celebration of Hagar’s 40th anniversary” said ToonSeum executive Director Joe Wos. “It is also a celebration of one of comics true first families! The artwork on display spans four decades, and two generations of the brilliant creativity, humor and talent of each member of the Browne clan!”
The exhibition features 40 pieces of original art, as well as personal artifacts that give insight into the family that inspired Hagar’s family.
The exhibition will run from October 1st-December 1st 2013. A special
Hagar the Horrible's Viking Fest, a celebration to honor the classic strip, will take place on Leif Erikson Day, October 9th from 7:30pm-10pm at the ToonSeum. Viking helmets will be on hand and there will be a special visit from Hagar himself!
The exhibition is made possible with the support of King Features Syndicate and the Browne Family.
