Velvet Was the Night: Silvia Moreno-Garcia with Gabino Iglesias

The New York Times bestselling author of Mexican Gothic discusses her follow-up, a smoky noir set during the Mexican Dirty War of the '70s.

Maite works a boring desk job in Mexico City and spends most of her time day-dreaming about slipping off somewhere, away from her dateless nights, late car payments, and overbearing mother. In her mind, she escapes to a tropical island with a hot lover from one of her favorite comic book romances. But when her next-door neighbor Lenora goes missing one day, Maite finds herself thrown into a turmoil of passionate love affairs and a very real war between student protesters and the government-backed units aimed at squashing their leftist ideology.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Silvia Moreno-Garcia is The New York Times bestselling author of the critically acclaimed speculative novels Mexican Gothic, Gods of Jade and Sorrow, Signal to Noise, Certain Dark Things, and The Beautiful Ones; the crime novel Untamed Shore, and the noir Velvet Was the Night. She has edited several anthologies, including the World Fantasy Award-winning She Walks in Shadows (aka Cthulhu's Daughters). She lives in Vancouver, British Columbia. 

Gabino Iglesias is a writer, editor, professor, and literary critic living in Austin, TX. He is the author of Zero Saints and Coyote Songs and the editor of Both Sides and Halldark Holidays. His fiction has been nominated for the Bram Stoker Award and the Locus Award and won the Wonderland Book Award for Best Novel in 2019. His editing has been nominated to the Anthony Award and the International Latino Book Award. His reviews appear regularly in NPR, the Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Review of Books, and the San Francisco Chronicle. He teaches creative writing at SNHU's online MFA program.
