The renowned Sportsmens Tavern will host the Steely Project’s only 2024 public concert series in the Buffalo area. The band will perform the complete album recordings of Aja and the Royal Scam. The blueprint for Steely Dan is unlike any other band in 70’s rock. Band leader Joseph Michael Mahfoud has gone to great lengths to follow this plan and assemble the right combination of skills, feel, training and talent needed to complete the task. Steely Dan requires a musician to move fluently through multiple genres, and also have the ability to improvise while reading charts of unique chord changes. It is one thing to emulate Steely Dan, but it is another to have a band of musicians that can approach the material from a completely fresh interpretation without ever losing the mindfulness of what drew you to the original recordings. It’s all there: a four piece horn section, a three piece vocal section, two guitarists to drive the rock sound, two pianists, bass and drums. This is a rare collection of 12 players with national resumes that include major historical recordings, high college degrees, a lifetime of training, and performances at major venues from LA to NYC. These are what the scene calls, “The Cats.” Mahfoud has assembled this stellar lineup for three shows in 2024.
