 The sound of Armenian Santour


Friday, April 7, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Theater


207 W 18th St, Austin, TX 78701


This evening’s performance will feature Armenian music performed on the santour, the Armenian national instrument, with piano and Armenian dhol (Armenian percussion)accompaniment. Armenian santour maestro Sarkis Petrosian, internationally acclaimed pianist Hamayag Hovanessian with Artur Galustyan. The Trio will perform folk and Classical music which spans the Armenian tradition from the 12th century to the 20th century. The performers were classically trained at the Komitas State Conservatory for Music of Yerevan.


The santour, similar to the Romanian cimbalom or the Ukrainian cimbali, is a stringed instrument, a hammered dulcimer played with mallets to create a unique range of sound.
