In 1980, a wealthy businessman named Carl Fletcher is kidnapped from his driveway, brutalized, and held for ransom. He is returned to his wife and kids less than a week later, only slightly the worse, and the family moves on with their lives. Forty years later, no one in his family—not Carl, not his wife, Ruth, not his three grown children—seem to have gotten over anything. Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s new novel, Long Island Compromise, spans the entirety of one family’s history over decades and generations all the way up to the outrageous present.

Brodesser-Akner discusses her new novel with Jake Silverstein, editor in chief of The New York Times Magazine
