Summer '68: View the trailer here.

Summer 68 stillAn in-depth examination of protest activities surrounding the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, SUMMER '68 reveals draft resistance, the growth of G.I. coffee houses, the development of alternative media and the early days of Third World Newsreel (aka Newsreel), our program partner for this screening and talkback. This powerful documentary also explores the tensions the movement faced in using mainstream media to broadcast its message as well as the philosophies, tactics, and problems of the student movement in the crucial year of 1968. This film was preserved by the National Film Preservation Foundation.

The film will be available to view for two days leading up to the panel discussion, from Wednesday, September 23-Thursday, September 24, with a final screening at 6 PM Thursday.

The live panel conversation will take place on Thursday, September 24 at 7 PM with filmmakers John Douglas and Norm Fruchter, author Dr. Vanessa K. Valdés and student activist Michaiyla Carmichael. We will also show some short clips during the discussion.

After you register with your email address, you will receive a confirmation of your RSVP. Links to view the documentary and attend the live conversation will be shared in separate emails closer to the event date.

About Third World Newsreel:
Originally established as the Newsreel in 1967, a radical film collective documenting the social movements of the late 1960s and early 1970s, it became Third World Newsreel, and as a non profit media center, prioritizes media by and about people of color and social justice issues, through educational distribution, exhibition, production and training.

This is a part of the TWN Evening seminars and Third World Newsreel's Organizing and Filmmaking: Then and Now is a series of free public film screenings followed by conversations with filmmakers and activists. These events will explore the rich history of media arts made by and in collaboration with historically marginalized communities while highlighting the constancy of issues and changes in community response over different generations.

This program is also being presented in collaboration with the Documentary Forum at the City College of New York, a center dedicated to supporting and encouraging the creation of documentary media and bridging City College’s media making community with the Harlem community in which it resides and a growing international online audience. An additional presenting partner is the Documentary Forum at the City College of New York.

This program will be streamed on Zoom. You must register with your email address in order to receive the links to view the film and attend the panel discussion. Please check your email starting on Wednesday, September 23 for more details.
