The South Side Soup Contest was created by the South Side Local Development Company in 2004 as way to showcase what the South Side retail and business community had to offer. From the beginning, the event proceeds supported the Brashear Association and the operation of its food pantry program and since 2012 also benefits the South Side Chamber of Commerce. The event is organized by members of both organizations along with almost 100 volunteers from the South Pittsburgh communities.

The Brashear Association, Inc.

Based on the core belief that everyone deserves a fair shot, Brashear Association provides South Pittsburgh residents with access to quality programs and services that help them address social, education, health, and economic challenges. Brashear Programs and Services are designed to serve the needs of local families and address every-day routines, from work to school to home. Brashear builds strong organizational and community partnerships, striving to build a sense of connection and togetherness in Hilltop and South Pittsburgh. The Brashear Association supports and enriches the lives of many residents in the neighborhoods of South Pittsburgh, thereby helping to build strong families and communities. Among their services, the Brashear Association operates two community food pantries located in South Side and Arlington. The Brashear Association’s food pantry provides food and other commodities to over 1,000 low-income individuals and families every year through the Henry Kaufmann Food Pantry in Arlington. Each household receives between 50-80 pounds of food per month and twice as much for families with children. The South Side Soup Contest provides over 1,200 items for its food pantry.  For more information or to make a donation to the Brashear Association, visit brashearassociation.org.
