Inspired by the real-life arts rehabilitation program at Sing Sing Correctional Facility in New York, filmmaker Greg Kwedar’s new drama stars an unforgettable ensemble cast of formerly incarcerated actors, led by the inimitable and Oscar-nominated Colman Domingo as Divine G. Imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit, Divine G nevertheless finds purpose by acting in the facility’s theater group alongside his fellow inmates. Every six months, the men gather to discuss the direction of their troupe, often looking to Divine G to help mount their next play. But when he recruits wary newcomer Divine Eye (Clarence Maclin), he gets more than he bargained for and the group’s dynamic begins to shift. Divine Eye suggests the group attempt a frivolous comedy for the first time, but Divine G soon realizes his recruit’s discomfort with the vulnerability required for what seems like a trivial pursuit. He tries to forge a connection as the men collectively unpack the pain of their experience, while undergoing the joy and escape of creativity. SING SING is a stirring true story of resilience, humanity and the transformative power of art.
