An exploration of the relationship between politics and public art in New York City.
New York City's patronage of public art has led the way for cities the world over. Sculptures and installations like "5 in 1" by Tony Rosenthal (1974, located in One Police Plaza) and "Untitled" by Milton Glaser (1986, located at Astor Place) have become part of the fabric of our streetscape, but they didn't appear out of thin air! A new book examines the polices and processes that have allowed such pieces to be erected. Focusing on people, agencies and organizations, and both temporary and permanent projects from the 1960s forward, Michele H. Bogart reveals the changing forms and meanings of municipal public art.
Bogart will discuss her research with CityLab editor Mark Byrnes, examining issues and themes from her book Sculpture in Gotham: Art and Urban Renewal in New York City.
