A Generation of School Closings

Chicago made history in 2013 when it closed 50 public schools. But that’s only part of the story. Starting in 2001 – and over the past 18 years – Chicago’s public school system has closed or fired all the teachers at an astounding 200-plus schools. And during that time, CPS has opened almost as many schools as it closed, including many charter schools, specialty schools, and test-in schools. What has this upheaval meant for Chicago and its communities?
