The Importance of Being Earnest

In Victorian London, a carefree young gentleman named John Worthing is visiting his close friend and confidant, Algernon Moncrieff. John, who is posing as his fictitious brother, “Ernest,” has won the heart of Algernon's cousin, Gwendolen Fairfax, for she strongly desires to marry someone with the confidence-inspiring name of Ernest. But when he asks for Gwendolen’s hand in marriage, her mother, the formidable Lady Bracknell, overhears and John finds he must reveal he was orphaned at a young age. Lady Bracknell refuses to consent to the marriage unless John can prove his lineage.

Returning to the country home where he lives with his ward Cecily Cardew and her governess Miss Prism, John finds that Algernon has also arrived under the identity of the invented brother Ernest. Algernon falls madly in love with the beautiful Cecily, who has long been enamored of the mysterious, yet nonexistent, brother. Chaos erupts and long-lost secrets are revealed as the two friends combat each other to convince the ladies that they are the true Ernest.
