Event Description

The independent scholar investigates the ways in which migration is portrayed in contemporary European cinema.

Book cover of Reframing the European OtherDuring the last three decades, Europe has undergone numerous periods of economic and political instability. The process of European integration, once hailed as a beacon of peaceful cooperation, appears to be stagnating, instead giving rise to notoriously more frequent manifestations of xenophobic violence, nationalism, and right-wing fundamentalism. Kamil Zapasnik’s new book, Reframing the European Other, examines how ongoing debates about European identity have impacted the portrayal of migrants in contemporary French and German cinema.

He will discuss the work of some of Europe’s most prolific contemporary filmmakers and how their films both reflect and respond to crucial historic events in Europe over the last 30 years.
