An aging jockey named Jackson (Clifton Collins Jr, Traffic, Capote), hopes to win one last title for his longtime trainer, Ruth (Molly Parker), who has acquired what appears to be a champion horse. But the years and injuries have taken a toll on Jackson’s body, throwing into question his ability to continue his lifelong passion. He’s nearing the end of the road and he knows this is his last chance to make a comeback. It’s a tough reality to face for both Jackson and his trainer, who worries about his ability to withstand any more injuries. The arrival of a young rookie rider (Moises Arias) who claims to be Jackson’s son, and whom he takes under his wing, further complicates Jackson’s refusal to give up on fulfilling his dream. Director Clint Bentley instills the film with an immediately engaging realism, taking viewers inside the “backside” of racetrack life. Filmed at a live racetrack in Arizona, Jockeyimmerses us in the true rider experience – real life, behind the track. Clifton Collins Jr’s masterful performance earned him the top acting prize at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. Q and A with Clifton Collins, Jr. following the screening.
