New Trier Choir Opera turns 100, presents Jesus Christ Superstar
In April 1920, the New Trier Music Department mounted its first-ever theatrical musical production, Gilbert and Sullivan's "H. M. S. Pinafore." What followed was an epic run of quality musical theatre that started the theatrical careers of thousands of students, as well as the professional careers of many including Ann-Margret, Liz Callaway and Beck Bennett.
"Jesus Christ Superstar" is the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage, set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.
Loosely based on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, "Jesus Christ Superstar" follows the last week of Jesus Christ's life. The story, told entirely through song, explores the personal relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, his followers and the Roman Empire.
The iconic 1970s rock score contains such well-known numbers as "Superstar," "I Don't Know How to Love Him," and "Gethsemane." A true global phenomenon, the production continues to touch new generations of audiences and performers.
Along with the centennial of New Trier Choir Opera, 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of "Jesus Christ Superstar." New Trier's production will have over 200 students participating in the orchestra, cast and crew, making it the largest theatrical production ever undertaken in the Choir Opera's 100-year history.
