The SC A Cappella Choir and Southwestern College Choral Union will combine forces with the Williams String Quartet to present Into the Light. This concert, sponsored by the Robert R. Warrender Trust, is the bookend performance of the Fall Choral Concert Out of the Darkness. The performance will feature J.S. Bach’s Come Sweet Death, Ola Gjeilo’s Sunrise Mass, and Eric Whitacre’s Fly to Paradise. It has been an incredible experience to work on a masterwork with these two groups of singers during these past three months. Gjeilo was inspired by the Sunrise in his creation of the Sunrise Mass, and he takes us on a journey from the heavens to the Earth. Although the traditional Latin text associated with Ordinary of the Mass is employed the titles of each movement represent this journey; The Spheres (Kyrie), Sunrise (Gloria), The City (Credo), Identity & The Ground (Sanctus & Agnus Dei). This concert will leave the audience with a sense of “bathing” in light and sound with the combination of choir, string quartet, and synthesized keyboard and drums.
“The music of the Sunrise Mass goes from dark and dream-like, to more emotional and dramatic, and eventually warm and grounded. It’s important to me that there is a positive evolution in artistic expressions, to move everything forward. That it has the capacity to help bring us deeper into ourselves rather than the other way.” – Ola Gjeilo
Tickets are $10.00/adult and Southwestern College faculty, students, and all children are free.
