The loss of a loved one is heartbreaking for anyone, but when a child loses someone special, confusion, fear and guilt are often added to the grief mix. To help local children work through loss, Hoffmann Hospice hosts Heart Art Summer Camp every June.
The camp is for children and teens ages 7 to 17 who have lost someone dear to them. Here, they begin the healing process by acknowledging their feelings and learning to cope with them. It offers grieving children a safe place to work through their grief, take time to reflect on the loved one/s they are missing and begin the healing process.
Activities include guest speakers, crafts and a special visit from the Hoffmann Hounds therapy dogs. Color, imagery and a variety of mediums are tools that help hurting children express hard-to-understand emotions. Communication is increased and coping skills are developed as children work through their grief and connect with children who have experienced similar losses. When it comes to art projects, counselors will focus less on the artistic quality and more on what the work reveals.
Grieving children will often express more through pen, paint and paper than they will through speech. Children can look like they are doing okay, but they often are forgotten grievers. They need to understand the grief process and find their new normal. We help them get there.
