The James-Bauer Realty Company platted Garden Acres in 1925, four years before the Great Depression crippled the housing market. Then a mile outside the city limits, this neighborhood was a model of suburban planning. While much of its original City Beautiful character has been lost, it remains home to Springfield’s largest collection of Sears, Roebuck & Co. catalog houses.
