In the search for meaningful criminal-justice reform, are prosecutors one of the keys to change?
How do we stem the tide of mass incarceration in America? In her new book, Charged, journalist and legal commentator Emily Bazelon argues that one answer is reform of the "outsize role" played by prosecutors in criminal justice. From choosing the charge to setting bail to determining the plea bargain, it’s prosecutors who often make crucial decisions that determine the fates of the accused. But, as Bazelon points out, District Attorneys are elected by the people, so the extent of their power is our power.
Bazelon will be joined by her former law school classmate Stacey Abrams, a lawyer and novelist who served as the minority leader in the Georgia House of Representatives, and campaigned for criminal justice reform as a candidate in a historic race for governor.
