Spirited Celtic Music from North of the Border!
The Balmoral School of Piping and Drumming is proud to present Nuallan! Formed by the Gaelic College and comprised of three acclaimed Cape Breton pipers – Keith MacDonald, Kenneth MacKenzie, and Kevin Dugas - Nuallan explores the style of piping brought from Scotland by Highland Gaels and developed over the past 200 years in Cape Breton Island. Nuallan's members are well-known individually for their rhythmic, musical playing. The performance will also feature piano and fiddle, as well as Irish and Scottish dancing.
Although Cape Breton pipers play the same highland bagpipes as their Scottish counterparts, their style is very different, more like pipe music, as it was played in the late 1700s and early 1800s. This music is fundamentally dance music, the most common tunes being strathspeys, reels and jigs. Solo pipers played for dances, particularly before the birth of electronic amplification. The music's flavor is dance-oriented, in contrast to the military marches and piobaireachd found in Scottish piping.
