The Dance of Death

The Dance of Death by August Strindberg                                                                 (in a new version by Conor McPherson)                                                           Pittsburgh Premiere Directed by Andrew Paul                                                        Scenic Design by Narelle Sissons                                                                                Starring Sam Tsoutsouvas, Helena Ruoti & Mark Staley                                        April 17-May 3, 2015                                                                                                  The New Hazlett Theater                                                                                    Production Sponsor: Richard E. Rauh

In The Dance of Death, which Strindberg considered to be his finest play, we meet Edgar and Alice, a witty, long-married couple and the obvious forbears of Albee’s George and Martha in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.  Married perhaps 25 years too long, this career military man and his grand dame of a former stage actress wife reside in a metaphorically apt former prison on a remote island off the Swedish coast. As their silver wedding anniversary approaches, their scathing and hysterically funny banter escalates, even ensnaring Kurt, an "innocent bystander". Will they survive to celebrate? Accept our invitation to come and find out.

The Dance of Death is rarely seen but McPherson’s caustic and hilarious new version reinvigorates the drama while maximizing the play’s use of black comedy.  The American premiere of this Dance of Death last summer at Chicago’s Writer’s Theatre swept the Jefferson Awards, taking Best Production, Best Actor and Best Actress.  Kinetic Theatre’s production will star Sam Tsoutsouvas and Helena Ruoti, each in the role of this or any other lifetime, with Mark Staley as Kurt.

$20 tickets for persons age 25 and under available at the door one hour before the show. Must show ID with proof of age.
