Event Description
Metamorphosis Opera Theater presents
Médée by Darius Milhaud
Come hear MOT's first fully staged production in The Lab Theater with a re-orchestrated score for flute, cello and piano creating an evening of high drama and intimacy.
Many are familiar with the Greek tragedy of Medea but probably not as well-known is Darius Milhuad's 1938 setting of the dramatic tale. The prolific composer took on the project as a commission from the French government in 1938 with the threat of war looming in Europe. Milhuad's wife, Madeleine, wrote the libretto with inspiration from the Classical sources of Euripides and Seneca, as well as the French playwright Corneille. Milhaud's score draws on these sources for inspiration, combining the harmonic openness of ancient Greece with a modernity and palette of orchestral colours firmly rooted in the 20th century.
