Event Description
Country: Egypt/France/South Africa
Director: Jihan El Tahri
From 1961 - 1991 the continent of Africa fell prey to a variety of influences, some destructive, some constructive. Most intriguing was the checkered relationship between Africa and the island nation of Communist Cuba. From Che Guevara’s military campaign to the fall of apartheid, some 300,000 Cubans fought alongside African revolutionaries. This is the previously untold story of that relationship, and one of the Cold War’s most vigorous contests (over resources and ideology). The fascinating documentary reflects on the ways in which it laid the blueprint for an escape from the shadow of colonialism. (2007; 118 min)
Co-presented by The Congolese Union of Pittsburgh & Friends of the Congo.
