This song cycle underscored the frightening fact of early 20th-century life and high rates of child mortality. Due to poor sanitation, diet, and pediatric health care, one in ten children died before their fourth birthday. In 1907 Mahler's own daughter died of scarlet fever. The accompanying images show that for many inner cities, Rochester included with the 7th highest poverty rate in the nation - not much has changed.
