Our modern lives are built on three centuries of growth in factory production, efficiency, and technology. But for all the progress they have engendered, some of the only factories we can remember by name are notorious for labor exploitation and environmental disasters.

Joshua B. Freeman, Distinguished Professor of History at Queens College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, provides a narrative of factories that spans time and geography and incorporates the words of artists and writers, critics and champions. He will be joined in coversation by Eric Foner, the DeWitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University and the author of numerous books on American History.
