Set in a rapidly changing China, the film follows four outcasts who channel their underclass rage into a bloody rampage. A fascinating mix of social realism and contemporary kung fu, it’s a new form of martial arts cinema: filmic tai chi for the poor, or those who have learned to turn abuse into a fight for justice. It intertwines four stories, from four different provinces, into a startling tale of four characters who violently reach their breaking point.
