Oil Sands Karaoke
Home to one of the most controversial industries in the world — the Athabasca tar sands — Fort McMurray, Alberta, has seen a record population boom. Thousands have flocked to the city to work in the oil patch, all attracted by the promise of good jobs and a high salary. The work is hard and the hours are long. The weather is harsh and the social life is sparse, and everyone must cope with the knowledge that many people worldwide — even friends and family — object, sometimes strenuously, to what they do for a living. How do they cope? With karaoke of course! Oil Sands Karaoke profiles five Fort McMurray residents as they prepare to unleash their inner divas at Bailey’s, the local pub, in a vocal battle royale.
Tundra Cowboy
Tundra Cowboy is the story of a man who lives alone on the Canadian tundra with a herd of reindeer. Henrik Seva comes from a small Swedish village and a long line of aboriginal Sami reindeer herders who lived nomadically, caring for their reindeer year round. Over his lifetime, those traditions of his ancestors are being eclipsed by technology and money. Now 49 and disillusioned, Henrik left Sweden and moved to the frozen shores of Canada’s Arctic Ocean to reconnect with a way of life he fears is being lost. Tundra Cowboy shows the intimate bond Henrik has created with the reindeer in Canada and also raises questions about how modern technology changes our relationship with the world around us.
