To celebrate Steve Hindy’s newest work, The Craft Beer Revolution: How a Band of Microbrewers Is Transforming the World's Favorite Drink, the Brooklyn Brewery cofounder is joined by New Belgium Brewing Company CEO Kim Jordan and founder of the American Homebrewers Association Charlie Papazian to recount how craft brewers forever changed the way the world buys, enjoys, and appreciates beer. As one of the founding players in the movement, Hindy brings a true insider’s account of the personalities, battles, and alliances that colored the early days of American craft beer.
Stephen Hindy is co-Founder, Chairman and President of The Brooklyn Brewery, one of America’s top 25 breweries. A former journalist, he became interested in home-brewing while serving as a Beirut-based Middle East Correspondent for The Associated Press. Back in the states as Newsday’s assistant foreign editor in 1988, he began brewing his own beer and persuaded his neighbor, banker Tom Potter, they should quit their jobs and start a brewery.
Hindy is a member of the Board of Directors of the Beer Institute and The Brewers Association. He is a director of Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Alliance, chairman of the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn, former chair of Brooklyn’s Tourism Consortium and a former member of Community Board 1. Hindy also serves on the Board of Transportation Alternatives and the Alcohol Beverage Manufacturer’s Research Foundation. With Potter, Hindy co-authored Beer School: Bottling Success at the Brooklyn Brewery, Forward by NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, published by John Wiley & Sons.
Kim Jordan is CEO and Co-Founder of New Belgium Brewing Company in Fort Collins, Colorado. As a classic basement startup, New Belgium’s beginnings were entrepreneurial; it’s now the third largest craft brewery and the first brewery in the United States to specialize in Belgian style beers. New Belgium is known for its commitment to environmental stewardship, and under Jordan's leadership, they have developed a set of interwoven practices that include employee ownership, high involvement culture, advocacy and of course drinking beer together.
In January of 2013 New Belgium announced the sale of 100 per cent of the brewery to its 475 co-workers. This enabled the formation of a family foundation with a goal of creating a new business model. Jordan and New Belgium have been widely recognized as business role models; she received the EPA’s highest regional award for Environmental Excellence and in 2012 was Entrepreneur Magazine’s CEO of the Year and CEO of the year by Colorado Biz Magazine. New Belgium was voted in the top ten best places to work by Outside Magazine, Men’s Journal, and The Wall Street Journal.
Charlie Papazian is the founder of the American Homebrewers Association (1978) and president of the Brewers Association (USA). He speaks and writes about the beer and brewing industry at many conferences, events and in many publications throughout the world. Charlie has five bestselling books and his Complete Joy of Homebrewing has sold over 1.2 million copies worldwide. He is also known for founding and continuing his work with the World Beer Cup, the Great American Beer Festival, Craft Brewers Conference, BrewExpo America, Brewers Publications, CraftBeer.com, and the magazines Zymurgy and The New Brewer.
